Saved from a rainy day — 72andSunny

72andSunny is a design and advertising firm with offices in Los Angeles and Amsterdam that provides astounding creativity to some of the world’s largest companies, including Nike and Coca-Cola. Like many creative firms dealing with visual content creation, most systems at 72andSunny are Mac-based, primarily MacBooks and MacBook Pros, with higher-end equipment running as servers. DataSource was initially brought onboard as part of a financial IT audit, which is a popular service we provide many customers. However, after implementing our initial recommendations, 72andSunny decided that working with DSS could mean brighter days ahead for all their IT needs. With a move to larger offices fast approaching, it was time to re-architect the IT infrastructure at 72andSunny the right way.

Details

From an IT perspective, the most mission critical area we identified was protecting the data in production, both before and after delivery to the client. When we visited 72andSunny’s offices, we noted that no redundancy existed on the main server, meaning that if one drive became corrupt, all data would be lost. We also observed that while users were encouraged to store files on the server, there were no policies in place and we were told that critical data had been lost in the past.

DataSource went right to work:

1) Moving into the new offices, we set up the server in a secure, temperature-controlled room with physical access limited to upper management and IT personnel only. We also took the opportunity to organize all the wiring and cabling systems for better management and scalability.

2) Data storage is absolutely critical to 72andSunny. With that in mind, we added drive redundancy to the main server so that data would remain intact, even if one drive were to fail.

3) We restructured the file system so that all critical user data (including everything related to client projects) would be saved to the main server, instead of to individual user workstations. This ensures that all data is backed up consistently and nothing ever goes missing or is permanently lost.

4) Since 72andSunny wanted its users to work from anywhere, DSS also assisted in installing secure remote access so that mobile users could gain access to corporate documents effortlessly, whenever and wherever they needed them.

5) 72andSunny lacked a simple way to manage security policy for disparate employees across the world, so we implemented Open Directory. This offered a simple and secure way to manage security policies and user access to the company’s proprietary resources.

6) We helped 72andSunny cut costs by removing an antiquated tape backup procedure with an in-house disk backup system, which allowed for offsite backups in case of disaster.

7) DSS was also instrumental in putting in place an infrastructure based on industry best practices, including a much higher level of security for both the system and network layers.

At 72andSunny’s request, DSS procured all the hardware and software they needed, since as a large buyer we can often get preferential pricing. Our staff implemented the complete solution on time, so that 72andSunny’s creative staff could focus on amazing their clients with fresh ideas, and not on backing up old data. The system now in place will allow the company to continue its phenomenal growth, adding new designers and engineers to their rapidly growing team. Perhaps the largest cost savings came when the company decided to outsource their entire IT support to DSS.

It just goes to show that when you provide a valuable service, sunny days will always follow.
